Taming Frizzy Hair

Expat.Guide Taming Frizzy Hair Hairdreams Singapore

If you have recently moved to Asia, the first thing you will notice about living here is that the weather is hot – a tropical paradise of bare skin, beach visits and balmy, sea breezes.
Something you may have noticed with the temperature rising is that one woe we just can’t ignore the dreaded combo of humidity and hair. Let’s face it, we’ve all experienced a moment where our hair has gone all Hermione Granger on us!
Frizz occurs when the level of humidity in the air is greater than the amount of moisture in your hair. When your hair is dry and the weather is humid, its the perfect recipe for frizz. Your hair simply absorbs moisture from the air which in turn causes the hair to swell, causing chaos. If this scenario sounds all too familiar to you then never fear! Below are our must do’s to beat the heat and have you looking more glam goddess and less like a lions mane!

1) CHOOSE YOUR SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER WISELY

While shampoo is terrific for removing dirt and oil from your scalp, it’s not so great for taming fluffy hair. Opt for a sulphate-free shampoo which gently maintains the natural oils on the scalp leaving your hair with more moisture. Avoid excessive shampooing – wash your hair every other day at the most. Select a conditioner that is hydrating and will replenish the moisture levels in the hair. Follow up with a hydrating mask once a week.

2) TRY A FRIZZ-FIGHTING COLD WATER RINSE

Cold water supposedly helps to close the cuticle tightly, helping your hair to achieve a glossy, manageable finish. Re-set your shower temperature for the coolest you can withstand and it will give your hair a more polished finish, minus the puffiness.

3) BLOT DON’T RUB

Once shampooed, blot your hair dry, rather than rubbing your hair. Rubbing the hair causes friction, encouraging each strand to become fluffier. Blotting the hair keeps the cuticle intact and cuts down on the puffiness as your hair dries.

4) IT’S ALL IN THE STYLING

Invest in good quality styling products. The must-haves for battling a humid climate are a heat protector, smoothing balm and a hairspray.
A good heat protector shields your hair from the heat of styling tools, helping to retain moisture in the hair. Without it your hair can further dry out causing endless frizz.
A smoothing balm or serum really helps to cut down the frizz when blow-drying. It will smooth down the cuticle making your hair super shiny and polished.
Hairspray is a girl’s best friend in humid conditions, it sets your hairstyle making it last longer. Look out for hairsprays that contain humectants as these products work hard to block our humidity. HOT TIP – When styling hair with thermal tools always takes super small sections. This way the heat will distribute more evenly giving you a longer-lasting hairstyle whether you are using flat irons for a super sleek look or a curling wand for effortless smooth curls!

5) IF ALL ELSE FAILS, FIND A TRUSTED STYLIST TO HELP TAME YOUR TRESSES

Don’t forget to ask for help! Whether you are after a trusted expert to give you a styling lesson, or you are after a keratin treatment (legendary practices of expat women in Singapore) or you just want to find a salon you can visit regularly for a blow-dry, then look no further.
